Photography Tips: Developing An Eye for Composition

With the rapid development of digital technology there is an alluring tendency to chase the latest and the greatest gear. However as many professional photographers would tell you if you are to grow as a photographer one of the most important skill that you need to develop is an eye for composition. Here are some tips for improving your eye for composition :

1. Take lots of photos and become your own best critique. Throw away what you don’t like and focus on what you do like.

2. Constantly review other photographers and fine artists who are better then you. Identify what is it you like about their work and don’t be afraid to try it for yourself. Even if you don’t get to their level it will make you stretch and in process you will learn new skills.

3. Leave your camera behind on purpose and take pictures with your mind. Remember what you can visualize you will eventually materialize.

4. Pay particular attention to the background. Does it support your foreground or distract it?

5. Focus on the relationship between the objects you are photographing. How are they connected, does this make an emotional impact on the viewer.

Perfect Dandelion Flower

The Dandelion flower is a very common and yet a wondrous flower. Its joyful yellow petals radiate in all directions as if to show us how happy it is. The symmetry of this particular flower is astoundingly perfect. It is also rare to see the dandelion flower grown in the middle of ferns trees, as ferns usually like a the dark moist environment of the rain forest. The contrast between the bright yellow of the dandelion flower and the deep greens of the fern trees brings a surreal feeling to this photograph.

Spirit Of Flowers

A friend and mentor of mine David Winston has kindly offered to do some shooting together. It was a beautiful evening, what photographers call the magic hour. I watched David every move as he was explaining how he goes about his craft. Then at the end things started flowing the Poppy flowers intrigued me the most. Silky, smooth bright red they were dancing in the wind.
The pair of Poppies is one of my favorites, its like a dance of two with synchronized movement. Also love the pink Morning Glory its transparent nature, happy, always facing the sun.

FLowers Of Life

I am always fascinated by beauty of flowers, their contrasting colors and their amazing details. I quickly discovered that there more then meets the eye to flower photography. The lighting and shadows and being able to capture the minute details was both a challenge and a pleasure.

More then that flowers is a great symbol for life in that they open up fully to the world as if to say hey look how beautiful I am, look how joyful I feel. There is a line in the song Amapola that says " I love you like the flower loves the sunshine" that’s the kind of love I imagine the flowers really do have. Although their beauty wanes quickly relative to a human life to me flowers truly symbolize the joy of being alive.
